Event: Can-Am Duels at Daytona
Date: Thursday, Feb. 15 2018
It’s time to fire up the engines again at Daytona International Speedway, and this time, all the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series drivers get to take part. The Clash at Daytona was just an appetizer, and the Can-Am Duel races are something like the salad before the Great American Race arrives as the main course on Sunday.
The Can-Am Duel at Daytona, from Daytona International Speedway. Two 60-lap races determine starting positions 3 through 40 for Sunday’s Daytona 500, with four non-qualified drivers racing their way into the field. The Thursday before the Daytona 500 used to be one of the most eventful days of the NASCAR season.
When 50 or more racing teams headed south to Daytona International Speedway for the winter icebreaker that is the Daytona 500, some of them knew they would be going home without turning a lap in the biggest race of the season. The race field had spots for only 43 cars (now only 40), and the Thursday qualifying races (they once were 100 miles, then 125 and now 150) were the last chance for marginal teams to earn a 500 start and a decent paycheck.
What’s interesting about the Duels this year is that the Daytona 500 entry list has only 40 cars on it. That means no one will be going home after either race in the Can-Am Duel, which almost always spell doom for someone making the big race.
That’s led to some thought that the twin 125-mile races on Thursday night may be tamer than usual, as there isn’t the same urgency involved for some of the lesser teams. Then again, with everyone in the Cup Series garage needing a dry run to get accustomed to new ride height rules and five-man pit stops, there should still be some sense of intrigue.
