Let’s be real. The best Winter Olympics sport you haven’t heard about is clearly the biathlon. It’s a combination of cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Basically, it’s the James Bond event. However, this has been an event that the United States of America haven’t exactly dominated. In all the years of the Winter Olympics, the United States has never medaled. Could that change this February?
Well, the first opportunity for the men to get their crack at gold, silver or bronze in Pyeongchang will be on Sunday, Feb. 11. That is when the first male biathlete event will be taking place. The series of biathlon events that will be taking place at Pyeongchang would be the sprint.
With biathlon continuing Sunday with the men’s 10km sprint and the U.S. still seeking its first Olympic medal, here are a few things to know about the second competition. Adjustments the Americans will have to make during the PyeongChang Games at the Alpensia Biathlon Centre are the wind conditions and low temperatures. Veteran biathlete Lowell Bailey on Wednesday noted it’s “fairly challenging” when to hit targets when they can’t feel their hands.
But the Men’s Biathlon is expected to be a rivalry between Fourcade and a handful of Norway Winter Olympics qualifiers, including co-favorite to win in most of these events, Johannes Boe.
The women went on Saturday in the 7.5km sprint. On Sunday, the guys will do their best in the 10km sprint. That will begin at 6:15 a.m. ET, 8:15 p.m KT at the Alpensia Biathlon Centre in Pyeongchang, South Korea.
The men’s 10km sprint is an individual event in which the biathletes ski for one half of the individual with two shooting bouts instead of four. Additionally, biathletes must ski a penalty loop for each target they miss instead of having a minute added to their time.
