U.S. vs. Finland in the first women’s hockey semifinal; and medals are up for grabs in freestyle skiing men’s aerials. Robb Stauber’s U.S. squad got past Finland 3-1 in group play. Jonathon Lillis of Rochester, N.Y., is the reigning aerials world champ. While the United States team played in a loss to Canada on Wednesday in the preliminary round, USA gained an automatic berth to the semifinal.
In the first showdown of Finland and USA in the preliminary tournament, the Americans ended up in a 3-1 victory. Forward Kendall Coyne delivered enough to dismantle Finland last week. However, it is still a question on how United States will take everything into consideration the adjustments on some of the problems they encountered against a defeat to Canada.
The United States and Finland cross sticks for a semifinal game Sunday night. The winning team will be just one more victory away from gold; the loser could leave Pyeongchang without an Olympic medal.
Iconic center Hanna-Riikka Valila, Hall of Fame-bound defender Jenni Hiirikoski and goaltender Noora Raty have led the way for Finland. The Pyeongchang Games are the 44-year-old Valila’s sixth Olympics and Hiirikoski and Raty are among the very best players in the world at their positions.
Valila has scored four goals at even strength thus far in the tournament, including two in Finland’s 7-2 rout over Sweden in the quarterfinals. Many believe the bronze medal is the Lady Lions’ to lose, but they have the talent to upset both the United States and Canada.
Team USA is looking to rebound after a frustrating defeat to Canada in the preliminary stage. They will have fresh legs as a result of having a bye in the quarterfinals. Head coach Robb Stauber’s team defeated the Finns 3-1 in last week’s Olympics opener.
