Liverpool midfielder Adam Lallana has returned to full training but he will not be in contention to face West Brom.
Defenders Joel Matip (muscle injury) and Alberto Moreno (ankle) will also miss the game with a number of other players carrying knocks from Sunday’s Merseyside derby.Manager Jurgen Klopp is set to make changes again, however, with Philippe Coutinho and Roberto Firmino due to start having been rested at the weekend.
The injury troubles seem to be mounting for Liverpool ahead of the gruelling Christmas period, but Klopp will be encouraged by Danny Ings’ return to action against Everton on Sunday after over a year out with a knee problem. They too have a new recently appointed manager, like Everton, and it can be a hard game to predict against sides like that, with players out to impress the new man in charge. So it’s still long balls of course, still set pieces… But they will face a daunting task trying to avoid letting their confidence take a hit in their next game as they travel to Anfield to face Liverpool on Wednesday.
Klopp is unlikely to utilise the England international’s talents against West Brom, who have not won any of their last 14 Premier League matches, and the Reds boss will also be without Joel Matip, who has only just started running again after suffering a thigh problem last month. “With freshness coming back into the team, I think we will see a reaction from the disappointment of the result.
Against West Brom, then, it will be interesting to see how “strong” a side Klopp chooses to go with and – more to the point – whether or not Lovren is included in the starting XI. “But he is good”, Klopp said, insisting the midfielder “trains completely normally” and that he and his medical staff will “have to see what we do with him” because they “need him for the next few weeks”. Liverpool defender Joe Gomez has urged his team-mates to bounce back from the 1-1 Premier League draw in the Merseyside derby when they host West Bromwich Albion today.
