The most highly-anticipated matchup of the Champions Leauge round of 16 begins on Wednesday when Real Madrid welcomes PSG to the Spanish capital for their first leg.
Once upon a time, Real Madrid were the Galácticos. Loaded with superstars, they were the big fish in the European football pond. Even in recent years, while their star power hasn’t quitebeen on that level, it’s still been enough to help them to three Champions League title in four years, a run of Champions League dominance rarely seen during the course of the competition’s history. Now, though, there are new Galácticos in town — and they’re Real Madrid’s round of 16 opponents, Paris Saint-Germain.
Led by a fearsome attacking trident of Neymar, Kylian Mbappé, and Edinson Cavani, PSG steamrolled their way through their Champions League group, including a shocking 3-0 win over Bayern Munich early in the round. They’ve also lost just two games in Ligue 1 action this season and dropped points two other times, scoring a jaw-dropping 76 goals through 25 league matches so far this season. That’s more than more teams score in a full league season, and we’re barely past the halfway mark.
We’re only in the Round of 16 in the Champions League, but it doesn’t get much bigger than Real Madrid vs PSG, who meet Wednesday for the first leg of their massive battle.
One might think that back-to-back Champions League titles and three trophies in four years would afford Real Madrid a little grace, but there remains immense pressure on Zinedine Zidane’s squad. 17 points behind Barcelona in La Liga and already eliminated from the Copa del Rey, Real Madrid is looking at a long stretch without meaningful football if they’re unable to advance past PSG.
